Ukrainian forces launched an overnight missile strike, striking the VNIIR‑Progress plant in Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic, more than 900 kilometres from active combat zones. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the raid on Telegram and shared a brief clip that appears to capture the missile’s descent and ensuing smoke and flames.
The FP‑5 Flamingo cruise missile, carrying a 1,150‑kg warhead and boasting a range of up to 3,000 kilometres, reportedly dropped the device in a facility that supplies the Russian army with components for drones and missiles. Local officials in the Chuvash Republic reported three injuries but did not comment on the extent of the damage to the plant.
Ukraine’s offensive has broadened in recent weeks, with strikes on the port city of Mariupol, a Russian oil refinery in Samara and a Black Sea oil tanker fleet referred to as a “shadow fleet.” In the same period, Russian air‑defence units claimed to intercept 326 drones, while Ukrainian forces recorded 181 downed out of 207 launched by Russia. The front line remains largely static, yet Kyiv seeks to pressure Moscow by targeting critical infrastructure.
Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed suggestions for talks, asserting that Russian troops continue to push across the front. Despite the ongoing conflict, Kyiv and its Western allies continue to develop advanced missile systems to increase war costs, pushing for a settlement. The latest strike marks a rare penetration deep within Russian territory and heightens military tension as negotiation prospects appear bleak.
