Ukraine Strikes Five Cargo Ships Amid Escalation; Romanian Drone Incident Highlights Security Risks
Ukrainian forces announced that five vessels were hit in the Sea of Azov and in coastal waters of territories claimed to be temporarily occupied. The commander of Ukrainian drone forces said the vessels were involved in “stealing” Ukrainian grain, as well as transferring military cargo and fuel. The strikes occurred a day after President Volodymyr Zelensky’s open‑letter appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin for face‑to‑face talks aimed at ending the war – a proposal that was rejected during Putin’s visit to St. Petersburg for an economic forum.
The action aligns with Ukraine’s long‑running campaign of targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure to curb the enemy’s war‑fighting capabilities. The drone commander Robert Brovdi revealed that the five ships, which include cargo vessels and tankers, were “illegally loitering” and had turned off their radars in an attempt to quietly seize grain. Two of the vessels – named Nastra and Circon – were flagged by Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry, which also confirmed casualties among its citizens in the attacks.
Meanwhile, Ukraine confirmed a Ukrainian naval drone exploded off the coast of Romania’s Black Sea city of Constanţa. The Romanian defence ministry noted the drone self‑detonated near an oil terminal, causing no injuries but damaging a ship and nearby warehouses. Romanian President Nicusor Dan flagged the incident as a “significant security event” following a stray mine discovered near Vama Veche and a prior drone strike on an apartment block in Galati. Ukrainian officials said the drone was knocked off course by Russian electronic interference; the remaining drones were unaccounted for but posed no further risk.
The clash of narratives – with Ukrainian military claiming successful strikes against illicit smuggling and Russia warning of the conflict’s cost – reflects the broader tension of a war that has now entered its fifth year. While the EU, France and the United States back Zelensky’s call for direct negotiations, Putin has stressed that Ukraine must withdraw from four occupied regions and relinquish ambitions to join NATO. Ukraine has firmly rejected ceding territory, arguing that it would embolden further Russian aggression.
