Estonia has announced that a NATO fighter jet shot down a drone, believed to be a Ukrainian projectile misdirected by Russian electronic interference, over its territory. According to Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur, the Romanian F-16 fighter fired a missile at the drone, with debris landing in a marshy area in central Estonia on Tuesday. Fortunately, no damages were reported from the incident.
In response, Ukraine accused Russia of deliberately redirecting Ukrainian drones aimed at legitimate military targets back towards Baltic nations, extending apologies to Estonia and its other Baltic allies for what they termed unintended incidents.
This drone downing is the latest in a series of incursions that have raised alarms in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Notably, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina resigned last week following a political crisis regarding Ukrainian drones entering Latvian airspace.
Earlier incidents included two Ukrainian drones hitting an empty oil storage facility in Latvia, which Ukraine attributed to Russian jamming. The Estonian defence ministry indicated that they had detected the drone even before it entered its airspace, and close monitoring was conducted leading to the quick response from NATO.
Estonian officials have emphasized that their airspace has not been permitted for use by any nation other than allies, underscoring the seriousness of unauthorized drone activities over NATO member states. As tensions heighten in the region, all eyes remain on the potential for further provocations, prompting discussions about the strategic implications for NATO in Eastern Europe.
