Woman seriously injured after shark bite in Sydney
A 35‑year‑old woman suffered serious arm and leg injuries after a shark bite at Coogee Beach in Sydney, police said.
Emergency services were called to the east‑side beach on Saturday morning. The woman was pulled from the water by members of the public who started first aid, before she was air‑lifted to hospital by helicopter.
Police closed several beaches in the area as a precaution. Eyewitnesses described a “massive pool of blood” and a frantic effort by a sport‑schooner to bring her into the water.
The incident follows last week’s fatal shark bite on a male diver south‑east of Perth and earlier attacks that claimed the life of a father of two near the same region.
Shark attacks are relatively common along Australian coastlines, though most are not fatal. Since 1791, almost 1,300 attacks have been recorded, with over 260 resulting in death.
Popular swimming and surfing spots in Australia typically have shark‑evasion measures in place, but the risk remains.
