Australian police are investigating explosive claims that Israeli forces raped and tortured activists from a Gaza‑bound flotilla after they were detained during a humanitarian mission.
The allegations come after Ukrainian activist group Global Sumud flotilla members met with Foreign Minister Penny Wong and senior officials to detail the alleged abuses.
In a statement, the AFP said it had "begun inquiries into the allegations made by a representative of the group" and is "engaging with a victim‑centric, trauma‑informed approach".
Israel’s embassy has rejected the accusations, stating no credible evidence has been presented and no formal complaints have been lodged.
Wong indicated the government expects an independent, transparent investigation into the activists’ claims, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the actions of far‑right Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir for taunting the detainees.
The flotilla, which had 11 Australians on board, was intercepted by Israeli forces on 18 May, leading to widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.
