Sydney Woman Wakes from Induced Coma Over a Week After Shark Attack
Leah Stewart, 34, was bitten by a shark on Saturday 13 June, while swimming near Sydney’s Coogee Beach. The attack left her with multiple bites on her arms and legs, severe blood loss and required an arm amputation during emergency surgery.
She has spent the past week in intensive care under an induced coma. On Tuesday, her brother reported that doctors had reduced her medication, allowing her to briefly wake. He said he heard her say “I love you” to her family and ask if her daughter was okay.
Joshua Stewart, Leah’s brother, wrote, “This is a lot faster than anyone expected, and for us this feels like a miracle and is everything so many of us have hoped and prayed for over the past week.” He added that she remains critical with further surgeries scheduled.
The news follows a string of recent shark incidents across Australia, including multiple attacks in January and fatal encounters in Queensland and Western Australia. Authorities warn that the combination of human activity and marine conditions can create a “perfect storm” for such events.
Leah, a teacher by trade, was on a routine morning swim when the shark struck. She is currently receiving ongoing care, with hope that her recovery continues to improve despite the serious injuries sustained.
