A 34‑year‑old mother, Leah Stewart, was bitten by a shark near Coogee Beach on 13 June. The attack left her with multiple bite wounds and severe blood loss, forcing her to undergo several emergency surgeries, one of which required her arm to be amputated.

After being in a critical condition, Stewart was placed under an induced coma to support her survival. On Tuesday, her doctors reduced sedation so she briefly woke, saying "I love you" to her mother and partner and asking if her daughter was okay.

An online post by her brother Joshua Stewart expressed gratitude, calling the turn "a miracle" and offering hope for her long‑term recovery. However, he noted that she remains in intensive care and has undergone five days of surgery, with more scheduled weeks ahead.

The incident follows a surge in shark attacks in Australia this year, including four attacks in just 48 hours in January, a fatal spearfishing attack in Queensland, and a 4‑metre shark bite that killed a Western Australian father of two.

Coogee Beach is a popular spot for swimmers, and authorities advise staying aware of the recent spike in shark sightings. The community remains hopeful as doctors monitor Stewart’s progress.
