VAR official says hand gesture was 'involuntary, subconscious twitch'

Video assistant referee Shaun Evans said the upside‑down “OK” sign he made during the VAR screen in Dallas was an unconscious reflex, not a deliberate message.

After a FIFA investigation found no breach of the Disciplinary Code, Evans clarified that he “did not consciously communicate a symbol” and apologized for the confusion.

The gesture, which can mean a harmless sign or an extremist salute, sparked debate on social media, leading to calls for greater transparency in officiating.

FIFA confirmed that Evans remains eligible to officiate the rest of the World Cup and that the team’s on‑field cameras will not feature future poses.
