Spanish Town's Tourist Train Overturns During Tapas Festival, 17 Injured
A small red tourist train overturned late on Saturday evening in the Spanish town of Cártama, injuring seventeen passengers.
The accident occurred just after 21:30 local time (20:30 BST) while the train was turning at a crossing on Santo Cristo road. The cause remains unknown, and authorities are conducting an investigation.
Emergency crews responded promptly and treated the affected passengers on scene. Four were later taken to a nearby hospital—three of them children—though none sustained serious injuries, according to local officials.
The train was part of an annual free ride called La Ruta de la Tapa y el Cóctel, which encourages visitors to travel around the town and sample food and drink at several local businesses. The service carried approximately 30 passengers at the time of the incident.
Following the crash, carriages of the train were stranded, and several passengers were photographed aboard while emergency services assisted a child lying on the floor. Images shared on social media show the wreckage and the response effort.
Due to safety concerns, the free train service has been suspended over the weekend while investigations continue. The event, which ran from June 10 to 14, highlighted the city’s restaurants and bars, allowing visitors to collect stamps and enter a raffle for prizes.
Cártama lies just 17 km from the popular tourist coastal town of Málaga, and it is a 44‑minute drive to Marbella.
