A red tourist train lies sideways after the incident, near emergency services
A red tourist train lies sideways after the accident in Cártama.

Seventeen people were injured when a tourist train overturned in the Spanish town of Cártama during the Ruta de la Tapa y el Cóctel festival, authorities say.

The crash happened just after 21:30 local time (20:30 BST) on Saturday evening. Investigators say the exact cause is still unknown.

Emergency teams reached the scene quickly and four passengers—three of them children—were transported to a nearby hospital. No victim suffered a serious injury, the local police reported.

The free train ride was part of an annual event where patrons are encouraged to try food and drinks from several local eateries. The train, carrying roughly 30 passengers, was stopped at Santo Cristo road when the incident occurred.

Images taken by social media users show people inside the overturned wagon, with emergency officials tending to a child on the floor.

The route of the festival runs from 10 to 14 June, guiding visitors around the city to various restaurants and bars. Participants can collect stamps from each stop and enter a raffle for prizes.

Cártama, located 17 km (about 10.6 miles) from Málaga and a 44‑minute drive from Marbella, has suspended the train service for the weekend while investigations are carried out.
