German rail company Deutsche Bahn had to pause train services nationwide on Tuesday night after an IT malfunction in the digital railway radio network.
All trains were held at stations for more than two and a half hours after the GSM‑R system—used for communication between train drivers and traffic centres—failed, leading to widespread disruption.
Deutsche Bahn said the issue had been fixed. It appealed to passengers for patience and announced that service is now gradually resuming.
Passengers were urged to seek alternative transport. Major delays and cancellations were expected, but the company did not disclose how many passengers were impacted.
S‑Bahn Berlin confirmed that the GSM‑R outage had been resolved and trains could run again, though it warned of possible delays and cancellations on some lines.
Deutsche Bahn apologized for the inconvenience. It offered taxi and hotel vouchers to affected passengers and will provide replacement transport where possible.
The national railway operator stated it is working to prevent recurrence of such an incident.
