German broadcaster removes contested intro after Elon Musk’s legal threat

German public broadcaster ZDF has deleted a segment it introduced in a news program that linked a knife attack in Belfast to a call made by right‑wing activist Tommy Robinson and promoted by Elon Musk on X.

The original introduction claimed that “someone takes a video that goes viral. A racist mob hunts migrants. The call for that came from ... Elon Musk.” Musk said it was a “lie” and threatened legal action. ZDF apologized that the wording was “misleading” and removed the passage after a cease‑and‑desist order was issued by a German law firm acting on Musk’s behalf.

Report on Belfast violence

The incident followed a brutal knife attack in North Belfast that left a victim bestial wounds and caused houses and vehicles to be set alight. Police arrested a Sudanese man at the scene, who faced an attempted murder charge and was remanded in custody.

ZDF issued a corrective transparency notice after removing the introduction, stating that the mislabelling “was imprecise and therefore misleading.” In its statement, the broadcaster noted that the activist’s post was shared by Musk, but the claim that Musk “called for the protests” was unsubstantiated.

The situation comes after media criticism regarding Musk’s influence on social media, with the Centre for Countering Digital Hate accusing him of amplifying anti‑migrant narratives that fanned unrest in Belfast. Musk has previously denied that his platform has incited violence, insisting that tensions stem from “murderous migrants” rather than the social media itself.

The incident highlights the growing scrutiny of broadcasters and tech figures when their coverage or commentary can be linked to public disorder.
