A deepfake porn scandal involving a well-known German television star, Collien Fernandes, has sent shockwaves throughout the country. The actress revealed her distress to a crowd in Hamburg, disclosing that she received death threats that forced her to wear a bulletproof vest.
A week earlier, Fernandes, 44, accused her ex-husband, Christian Ulmen, of sharing pornographic deepfakes of her on the internet. The explosive claims, initially reported by German news outlet Der Spiegel, have led to widespread protests, government scrutiny, and intensified discussions about the inadequacy of laws regarding digital sexual exploitation.
Ulmen has denied the allegations and is currently pursuing legal action against the magazine that published the initial article. His lawyers assert that he has neither created nor distributed deepfake videos of Fernandes, calling the accusations false. They argue that their case is not linked to the ongoing German debate regarding legal loopholes for deepfake pornography.
The public reaction to Fernandes' claims has been immense. Over 250 women across various sectors have come together to articulate 10 demands for better protection against non-consensual pornography, including clearer legal repercussions for producing and sharing deepfake content.
Germany's Federal Justice Minister, Stefanie Hubig, has announced plans to amend legislation to categorize the creation and distribution of pornographic deepfakes as a punishable offense, with potential penalties reaching two years in prison. Currently, German law only partially addresses the dissemination of such materials if they infringe upon someone's image rights.
As the legal discourse continues, Fernandes remains a vocal advocate for justice, noting the emotional and physical toll this experience has taken on her life. Reflecting on the outrage, she stated, I’m standing here with a bulletproof vest under police protection… because men want to kill me. The case underscores the urgent need for legislative change to address the growing threat of digital abuse against women in Germany.
