CHICAGO (RTW News) — Across the United States, a significant winter weather event is underway as temperatures plunge and snow begins to accumulate in the Northern Plains. The forecast indicates that snowstorms will intensify, moving eastward, particularly affecting the Great Lakes region while the southern states brace for an unexpected chill.
In the Chicago area, initial flurries turned into more substantial snowfall, with predictions of intense winter weather starting Sunday evening. The National Weather Service has already issued a winter storm warning for the region, anticipating wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour and as much as 18 inches of snow in some areas surrounding Lake Michigan.
Weather expert Kevin Doom emphasized the potential for treacherous driving conditions Monday morning due to heavy snowfall. Meanwhile, hazardous travel warnings have been issued for states including Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin, where snow accumulations of up to a foot are possible.
In Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota, “patchy blowing snow” and wind chills are expected to reach near zero, prompting advisories for residents. Some regions have already recorded measurable snowfall, including over five inches in northern Iowa and four inches in southwest Minnesota.
Further complicating matters, cold weather advisories are in place for parts of Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky, with many southern states, from Texas to Georgia, predicted to experience freezing temperatures early next week.
In Arkansas, meteorologists are advising farmers to protect their crops as the growing season officially comes to an end with the expected freeze.
