A powerful storm system unleashed a series of tornadoes across the Upper Midwest this past weekend, leaving several communities to recover from the wreckage. Significant damage has been reported in rural areas, particularly in central Wisconsin, where tornadoes wreaked havoc on homes and infrastructure.
Residents in Lena, Illinois experienced structural damages, with roofs torn off homes and downed power lines causing widespread electricity outages.
“We are fortunate that there were no fatalities or severe injuries reported,” said Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall, reflecting on the aftermath of the storm that struck Lena on Friday.
Wisconsin officials echoed this sentiment as they assessed the damage in places like Kronenwetter and Ringle. Fire Chief Chris Kielman confirmed that some residents were temporarily trapped in their basements but fortunately emerged unharmed.
This level of destruction was unprecedented for many officials, including Marathon County Sheriff Chad Billeb, who remarked, “In my 34 years of service, I have never seen such devastation.”
Local leaders believe that recovery will be a lengthy process. Wisconsin state representative Brent Jacobson noted that as photos and videos continue to emerge, it’s evident that massive rebuilding efforts will be necessary.
The National Weather Service is conducting surveys in the affected regions to determine the full extent of damage caused by the tornadoes. In addition to Wisconsin, authorities in Minnesota are reporting significant destruction, with at least 30 homes damaged in Marion Township alone.
Penned from Olmsted County, sheriff officials reported conducting door-to-door checks, emphasizing the community's response to assisting those in need.
The storm also affected students in Lena as 14-year-old Leo Zach recounted the panic that ensued at his high school music competition when the building began to shake and the power failed. “I just tried to stay calm and help others,” he said.
The community of Lena, home to almost 3,000 residents, is grappling with the aftermath, and state officials, including Governor JB Pritzker, have pledged support for recovery efforts.
As affected areas begin to come together in the wake of this catastrophe, the resilience of these communities will be put to the test.
