Ransom Note Claims Nancy Guthrie Died After Her Mother’s Abduction

On 31 January, 84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today‑show host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her Tucson home. Three weeks later a ransom note appeared demanding millions of bitcoin for her release, followed by a second letter that claimed she had died.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department says the case remains active, while the FBI has been working closely with local authorities. Both agencies have urged the public not to publish details from the letters until the investigation is complete.

Family members insist the notes were genuine, noting they were sent to local media outlets such as TMZ and the BBC. Law‑enforcement officials have not yet confirmed the authenticity of the documents.

Investigators have recovered security‑camera footage showing a masked figure outside Nancy’s house. The family has repeatedly warned that Mrs. Guthrie was in fragile health and without essential medication at the time of her disappearance.

Authorities and the FBI have offered up to $1.1 million for information leading to Nancy’s return. Savannah Guthrie left the Today show for more than two months before resuming her duties in early April.

A video released in February shows a masked figure standing outside Nancy Guthrie’s house, adding a chilling visual to the case.
