More than 120,000 people have gathered under the sun to partake in an open-air Mass led by Pope Leo XIV in Douala, marking the largest assembly of his ongoing Africa tour. The event took place at Japoma Stadium, radiating a spirit of hope and unity among the attendees.
Upon his arrival in Douala on Friday, the Pope reiterated his calls for peace, especially after his visit to the Anglophone region affected by a protracted conflict. He encouraged the faithful to embrace community support, stating, 'Reject every form of abuse or violence, which deceives by promising easy gains but hardens the heart and makes it insensitive.'
The crowds, which included individuals from various walks of life, camped overnight to secure a good spot for the pontiff's address, showcasing their devotion. Many participants expressed joy in witnessing Pope Leo, emphasizing the collective desire for a peaceful future in their troubled nation.
During the Mass, the Pope engaged attendees with messages focused on spirituality and the importance of nourishing one's talents for the betterment of society. 'Do not let yourselves be corrupted by temptations that waste your energies and do not serve the progress of society,' he said, echoing sentiments that resonated deeply with his audience.
This notable occasion marks the Pope's fifth day in Africa, with prior visits initiated in Algeria. He is set to continue his journey through Angola and Equatorial Guinea.
