Sulemana Abdul Samed, affectionately called Awuche, died at 33 in Tamale hospital on Monday. He had been admitted for infections in his legs that stemmed from chronic sores, complications rooted in his long‑term Marfan syndrome.
Awuche’s height, confirmed by a BBC measurement in December 2022, made him a beloved figure in the Northern region. His generosity and approachable nature led him to be regarded as a local hero; even residents of afar crossed paths with him, proudly claiming his hometown of Gambaga.
Diagnosed with Marfan syndrome at 22, Awuche’s body soon exhibited rapid growth beyond peers. The genetic disorder caused extreme limb length and curvature of the spine, hindering mobility and creating painful skin issues.
The interruption of his medical bills was eased when Ibrahim Mahama, brother to Ghana’s former president and a successful businessman, agreed to shoulder his costs at Tamale Teaching Hospital. He followed progress and provided updates through the month to the public.
Family members said Awuche will be buried in Tamale rather than Gambaga to manage the volume of mourners. The community is shocked by the sudden loss of a man who once promised “Let us go” in a Hausa phrase, forming a lasting identity in the region.
