In brief

Federal Judge Marcelo Martinez de Giorgi dismissed the criminal investigation into President Javier Milei and his sister Karina Milei after prosecutors asked for dismissal, citing insufficient evidence of fraud. The case stemmed from Milei's brief promotion of the $Libra crypto coin on X in February 2025, which saw a price surge before crashing when he removed the post. Critics called for impeachment and alleged a "rug pull", while Milei maintained he was merely sharing information and had no role in the token's creation. The judge ruled the events did not constitute criminal deception, and an anti‑corruption office remains tasked with monitoring any improper conduct.

A criminal investigation into Argentine President Javier Milei and his sister Karina Milei has been dropped after a federal judge dismissed the case at the request of prosecutors.

The investigation stemmed from Milei’s brief promotion of the cryptocurrency $Libra on the social‑media platform X in February 2025. The coin’s price swelled following his post, only to plummet after he deleted the tweet, leaving many investors with significant losses.

Opposition members of Congress called for impeachment proceedings and online commentators accused Milei of a “rug pull” – an alleged scheme that lures buyers and then stops trading. Milei has consistently denied any role in planning or endorsing the token, stating that he merely shared the link to it in good faith.

In a statement, Judge Marcelo Martinez de Giorgi said the reported events “do not fall under a legal category” and that no “criminally relevant deception” could be proven. The Anti‑Corruption Office remains tasked with assessing whether the president acted improperly.

Milei has yet to respond to the news that the case has been dropped, but his office reiterated that his handling of the situation was lawful and that he was not involved in the creation of $Libra.
