In brief

A fire broke out on Friday night at Adolf Hitler’s mountain retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle’s Nest, in Bavaria and was still smoldering early on Saturday. Police arrested a suspect in connection with the blaze and are investigating whether the fire was intentional. The building, used by Hitler to plan wartime operations, has survived WWII and now serves as a tourist site. The emergency response involved about 200 personnel, and no injuries were reported. Authorities urge that the incident be examined to uncover motives and any potential extremist links.

Police in the south German state of Bavaria detain a suspect after a sudden fire at Adolf Hitler’s historic mountain retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, commonly known as the Eagle’s Nest.

Dispatchers in Traunstein received an alarm at 21:15 local time (19:15 GMT) on Friday night and firefighters discovered the building engulfed in flames. Rough terrain and the building’s location at 1,800 metres above sea level hampered the blaze‑fighting efforts.

Although the structure was still burning into the early hours of Saturday, no casualties were reported. More than 200 emergency personnel were involved in the operation.

The Kehlsteinhaus, completed in 1938, served as a part‑time seat of government for Hitler, where he convened commanders to plan the 1941 invasion of the USSR. Today the site operates as a museum and mountain inn, sometimes described as a cautionary reminder of the depths of Nazi tyranny.

Authorities have opened a criminal investigation to determine whether the suspect was involved in the fire, with police seeking evidence of arson or extremist motives.
