At least three people, including a child, were killed in Russian missile attacks in the early hours near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. The missiles struck the east of the city, and witnesses reported hearing powerful explosions in the quiet before dawn.
Falling debris damaged apartment buildings and cars, and a fire broke out at a separate building, officials said, adding that three others were wounded in the ballistic missile strikes. Emergency crews fought flames at a building and fuel tank in Kyiv, according to Mayor Vitaly Klitchko on Telegram. The Ukraine state emergency service shared photos of garages, a business and a building on fire in Kyiv, noting that the victim count was still being clarified.
President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Serbia for his first foreign trip after raising concerns about Ukraine’s ability to fend off missile attacks due to depleting interceptor stockpiles. He said delays in receiving anti‑ballistic systems have caused horrific casualties and destruction and that stronger interceptor capability could have saved lives in recent deadly assaults. Zelensky added that supply of interceptors from allies had decreased this year.
The situation comes as Ukraine has targeted oil refineries in Russia, aiming to cut the Russian state’s ability to finance the war. Recent stalled mediation talks have intensified the ongoing escalation between the two sides.
