At least 15 civilians have been confirmed dead in Sunday's shooting attack at Bondi beach, where many were attending a celebration for the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.
Among the fatalities were two rabbis, a Holocaust survivor named Alexander Kleytman, and a 10-year-old girl named Matilda.
Authorities reported Matilda's tragic story, as her former teacher described her as a bright, joyful, and spirited child who brought light to those around her. The Harmony Russian School of Sydney, where she was a student, expressed heartfelt condolences to her family, highlighting the profound impact her loss has had on her community.
Rabbi Eli Schlanger, known as the Bondi Rabbi, was a key organizer of the event, leaving behind a wife and young children. His cousin confirmed his tragic murder, sharing the legacy of kindness and humanity he left behind.
Another victim, French national Dan Elkayam, who had recently moved to Australia, was remembered fondly by both friends and his football club for his talent and popularity.
Alexander Kleytman, a Holocaust survivor who shielded his wife from gunfire, was tragically confirmed dead, leaving behind a family and a history of survival narrative that touched many lives.
Also among the victims was Peter Meagher, a former police officer, who was working as a freelance photographer at the event when he was fatally shot. His rugby club expressed the sadness of losing a cherished member of their community.
