India's weather department has announced that parts of northern India, including the capital city of Delhi, are likely to experience serious heatwaves over the weekend. The warning was issued after temperatures hit over 40°C on Thursday, marking one of the hottest days of the year for the city.
The department further cautioned that several central and western states, including Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, will also see above-normal temperatures for the next few days. Extreme heat during the summer months can lead to various health issues and has previously resulted in fatalities.
On Friday, officials indicated that temperatures in northern and central India are expected to rise by an additional 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. In light of the climbing temperatures, Delhi's education department has responded by issuing new guidelines for schools concerning outdoor activities, recommending that open-air classes be halted and water consumption reminders be implemented.
Experts have highlighted the serious health implications associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat, which includes risks such as dehydration, heatstroke, and cardiovascular stress. Vulnerable populations, particularly infants, the elderly, and outdoor workers, are at heightened risk during these sweltering conditions.
