Heatwave Strikes France: Over Half the Country Under Red Alert

France’s 96 regions are now under a red heat alert. The government warned that temperatures over 40C will sweep the western coast, with Bordeaux expected to hit 43C.

The heatwave has forced 845 schools to close for the day and an additional 1,800 to end classes early. The Ministry of Education urged parents to keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours.

Transport operators have warned commuters to avoid or postpone train journeys. France’s SNCF reduced several Paris train lines and Belgium’s operator cancelled peak hour services.

Health officials have cautioned that the intense heat will end until the end of the week and have urged citizens to stay hydrated and in shade.

The record high temperatures are already spilling over into neighbouring Europe – Madrid may reach 39C and Rome 37C.
