A brown bear has killed a man and badly wounded a woman in a traditional Mongolian dwelling outside Ulaanbaatar.
The incident occurred overnight in Bayanzurkh district, where the couple lived in a nomadic tent known as a ger. Police say the 40‑year‑old man died on the scene, while the woman in her 50s managed to flee and alert neighbours. She is now in serious condition at a local hospital.
Officials warn that bear sightings are on the rise as climate change and food shortages push animals closer to human settlements. In 2024 only 24 encounters were reported near the capital—an increase from two in 2018.
Rangers are currently tracking the creature and authorities are procuring tranquiliser dart guns for remote operations. Meanwhile, residents are urged to report any bear sightings promptly.
The attack highlights a growing trend of wildlife‑human conflict in Mongolia, where a significant portion of the population remains nomadic but many are moving to urban centres.
