Navi Pillay: The Woman Behind the 2026 Peace Prize
On October 9, the Swedish Nobel Committee announced that former International Criminal Court (ICC) judge and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay would receive the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
In its statement, the committee praised Pillay’s “efforts to promote peace and international law,” highlighting her steadfast commitment to justice across continents.
Pillay’s career began in apartheid‑era South Africa, where she studied law and witnessed the brutal realities of racial injustice. Her experiences later led her to the ICC, where she helped prosecute war crimes in the former Yugoslavia and went on to serve as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
Throughout her career, she has been a voice for the powerless, campaigning for victims in Rwanda, the Gaza Strip, and throughout the world, turning her legal expertise into a powerful advocacy platform.
The award acknowledges Pillay’s lifelong dedication to protecting human rights and advancing global accountability—an achievement that underscores the enduring power of law and peace work in a complex world.
