LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) — The chilly air hung heavy over the holiday season in small town Lexington, Nebraska, as worshippers left Mass at St. Ann’s Catholic Church to discuss the impending closure of their community's largest employer, the Tyson Foods beef plant.

“The news hit suddenly. They tell us there’s no more work. Your world closes in on you,” expressed Alejandra Gutierrez, one of the 3,200 individuals facing job loss when the plant ceases operations next month after more than 20 years.

The closure threatens more than just jobs; it could force families to relocate, disrupting lives in a town of 11,000, leading many to consider moving to places like Omaha or even to other states.

“The loss of 3,000 jobs in a community this size is a significant blow,” stated Michael Hicks, director at Ball State University's Center for Business and Economic Research. "It will showcase the harsh realities faced by many small towns in America."

For many like 52-year-old Francisco Antonio, the reality is daunting. As he sat reflecting on his family's future, he shared, “It feels like home, not just a job. We need another opportunity here in Lex; otherwise, Lex is gonna disappear.”

Amid these challenges, local leaders are urging Tyson to reassess its decision, expressing hope for future employment opportunities that could arise from the repurposing of the facility. “Tyson owes a debt to this community,” said City Manager Joe Pepplitsch, emphasizing the company's longstanding presence and the local economy's dependence on its operations.
