At least 30 people have been injured following a Russian drone strike on a railway station in north-east Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

In a post on X, he stated that preliminary reports indicated train staff and passengers were present at the site of the strike in the city of Shostka, located in the Sumy region. Emergency services are on the scene and have begun assisting those affected, with more information regarding the injured still being gathered.

Zelensky also shared a video that captured a damaged train carriage engulfed in flames. He stated, The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians. This is terrorism, which the world has no right to ignore.

The president emphasized the continuous threat to civilian life posed by Russia, urging the West to act upon their previous statements of support. The attack is particularly significant as three children, aged 8, 11, and 14, were among the injured. Zelensky asserted that there was no military rationale for the attack, which he described as intended to instill fear in the population.

It has been reported that two drone strikes hit two passenger trains amidst an ongoing evacuation effort, marking an escalation in Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian railway infrastructure.

The situation is frantic with local authorities and emergency services working to address the immediate needs of those affected while calls for increased military support for Ukraine resonate across the political landscape of the West. As drone and missile assaults increase, the need for advanced air defense systems has become a focal point for Ukrainian authorities looking to safeguard their airspace.
