US‑Iran Deal Fuels Uncertainty Over Lebanon Ceasefire

A new agreement between the US and Iran has finally been signed after a series of protracted negotiations. Both sides now claim victory, with US President Donald Trump declaring "This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region."

Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, announced the memorandum of understanding and highlighted Iran’s military achievements. The agreement is said to lift the Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the US blockade of Iranian ports, although the withdrawal of those restrictions may not happen immediately.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, the first to announce the deal, states that it includes a call for the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including actions in Lebanon. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has shown no sign of ending the ongoing offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Recent Israeli strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut in response to Hezbollah rockets have brought the region to the brink of derailing the agreement. Iran has only just avoided a missile response towards Israel to keep the deal moving forward.

The resolution of the dispute over Lebanon remains unclear. While two recent ceasefires have stalled, the deal partially lifts the uncertainty of conflict that had oscillated between ceasefire and confrontation.

A still-unresolved key issue for the US is whether the agreement offers sufficient guarantees to prevent Iran from ever developing a nuclear weapon. Iranian state media claims a mechanism may have been set up, but details will require further negotiation in the days ahead.

The ceremony that will formalise the agreement is scheduled for next week, and the path towards that day remains fraught with potential twists. Until then, the region remains under a veil of uncertainty, though the immediate threat of missile attacks on Gulf neighbours may be temporarily eased.
