An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has shot a man in the leg in the US city of Minneapolis, where an ICE agent shot dead a woman last week.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said federal officers initially pursued the man in a car chase because he was illegally in the US from Venezuela.
The City of Minneapolis confirmed a man was shot and taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries. An ICE officer was also taken to hospital to be treated for injuries, the DHS said.
Minneapolis city officials said on X: We understand there is anger. We ask the public to remain calm. The city has called for ICE to cease operations in the area.
The man got out of his car and an altercation took place between him and an ICE official, the DHS stated. During the incident, two other people allegedly "attacked" the officer. The officer, fearing for his safety, fired defensive shots, according to the statement.
Both attackers are in custody, the DHS affirmed, while the FBI has been called to investigate the incident.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized federal officers for their actions, claiming they have created chaos in the state. Protests quickly erupted following the shooting as community members condemned ICE's presence and actions.
This comes on the heels of another shooting last week that resulted in the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, which has further inflamed tensions between local citizens and ICE agents.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche attributed the unrest in Minnesota to the state's leadership, asserting that it was a direct result of a FAILED governor and a TERRIBLE mayor encouraging violence against law enforcement. Minneapolis Governor Tim Walz also called for an end to ICE's operations in the state.
