President Donald Trump has said the US will take very strong action against Iran if it executes protesters, as rights groups say more than 2,400 anti-government demonstrators have been killed in a violent crackdown by Iranian authorities. Relatives of 26-year-old Erfan Soltani, who was detained last week, have told BBC Persian that he is due to be executed on Wednesday.
A representative from the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights also stated that they had never witnessed a case move so quickly. Speaking to CBS News, Trump warned about potential executions: If they hang them, you're going to see some things... We will take very strong action if they do such a thing.
Soltani's relative communicated that an Iranian court issued a death sentence in an extremely expedited process. Awyar Shekhi from Hengaw indicated that the Iranian government is employing severe measures to instill fear and suppress dissent.
Reports indicate varying death tolls, with some Iranian officials attributing 2,000 deaths to terrorists. Trump has vowed to gather accurate information regarding fatalities in Iran amidst this turmoil. The Human Rights Activists News Agency has confirmed 2,403 protester deaths, including 12 children, despite ongoing internet censorship and a blackout.
Trump had previously stated on his social media platform that Iranian authorities would pay a big price for their actions against protesters and encouraged continued demonstrations. He has canceled meetings with Iranian officials until the violence ceases, indicating possible military responses and economic sanctions, including tariffs.
The protests, which have ignited across 180 cities following widespread anger over economic conditions, have escalated into substantial demands for political reform, posing significant challenges to the Iranian clerical regime since the 1979 revolution. Despite the government's aggressive response, characterized by mass arrests and violent repression, the motivation for the protests remains deeply rooted in calls for change amidst growing dissatisfaction with the regime.
