WASHINGTON (RTW) — President Donald Trump's push to assert control over Greenland has drawn disapproval from much of the U.S. public and even from within his own party, as highlighted by a new AP-NORC poll.

The survey shows that about 70% of U.S. adults disapprove of Trump's approach to Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark and NATO ally. This rate is notably higher than the disapproval rates for his overall foreign policy, marking a weak point in his administration’s standing.

Even among Republicans, approximately half have expressed disapproval concerning Trump's ambitions regarding Greenland, despite some support owing to claims of national security interests in the Arctic region where China and Russia pose threats. The poll results pose a challenge for Trump as he typically garners unwavering support from his base.

Discontent Among Republican Voters

The survey indicates that Trump's Greenland strategies have led to the lowest approval ratings from Republicans compared to other key issues like immigration or the economy, where he still enjoys roughly 80% approval.

Republicans under 45 are particularly disenchanted with Trump's tactics regarding Greenland, with about 60% indicating disapproval, contrasting with about 40% approval among older party members. Some younger voters have openly criticized Trump's approach. For example, 29-year-old Aaron Gunnoe voiced his disbelief at Trump's aggressive stance on Greenland, saying, It’s owned by somebody else. That should be the end of it.

The poll was conducted from February 5 to 8, 2026. Despite his contentious strategy on Greenland, Trump's overall foreign policy approval remains stable, with about 40% of U.S. adults expressing approval of his foreign dealings.

As the Munich Security Conference approaches, leaders are addressing rising trans-Atlantic tensions, bringing further scrutiny to Trump's assertive foreign policy direction.

The findings suggest that Trump's Greenland initiative could jeopardize his support from both the general public and politically critical demographics within his party, as he continues to navigate complex international relations.
