Gang Leader Killed in Flower‑Decorated Airport Ambush

Three days after President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency across ten provinces, a man who police suspect ran a faction of Ecuador’s Los Águilas gang was shot dead outside the arrivals terminal of José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil.

Security footage shows a young pair waiting outside the arrivals hall surrounded by stuffed toys and bouquets. One stepped forward, pulled a handgun hidden behind a stuffed bear, and fired a single shot that struck 39‑year‑old Suástegui point‑blank in the chest. A second gunman later fired at the victim before fleeing.

Police arrested two teenagers for their roles in the ambush. The police identified Suástegui as the “leader” of Los Águilas, a gang designated a terrorist organization by the Ecuadorian government in 2024 and known for drug trafficking and extortion across the El Triunfo district east of Guayaquil.

The arrival hall was sealed for more than two hours while forensic teams investigated the scene. A bystander was wounded when a suitcase collapsed during the shooting.

The incident is the latest in a surge of gang‑related murders, with Ecuador’s homicide rate breaking records earlier this year. The new emergency powers granted to security forces—such as warrantless house searches under reasonable suspicion—have not yet curbed the deadly violence, which is intertwined with the country’s role as a major corridor for cocaine smuggling from Colombian and Peruvian production zones to the United States and Europe.
