Montreal Shooting Incident

In a midday gun incident in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal, an officer, a civilian and the lone gunman were killed, police officials confirmed on Monday.

The suspect was shot and killed immediately by police, while another officer sustained serious injuries and is reportedly in stable condition.

Witnesses described a gun sticking out of a window and heard shots before calling the police. The attack began after 11:30 EDT (15:30 GMT) and brought traffic to a halt on a busy motorway, suspending local metro service.

The unnamed male suspect appears to have acted alone; Rogers Radioth causes had no clear motive. The incident prompted the sharing of a broadcast alert by the RCMP nationwide, warning about a document that allegedly encourages citizens to shoot police officers.

Local resident Danny Wilk recounted escaping to a nearby pizzeria, seeing the shooter in military clothing, and observing the officer after the gunfire. He noted the victimed officer was lying on the ground before being shot by law enforcement.

This is the first line‑of‑duty police death in Montreal in nearly 25 years. Police chief Fady Dagher called the event a “nightmare,” describing his emotional reaction during a press briefing.

The fallen officer has been identified as Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, who joined the force in 2021. His colleagues will fly flags at half‑staff in his honour.

The civilian killed was Michael Moshe Mizrahi, a beloved member of Montreal’s Jewish community. His death was described as an innocent victim of the event by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, which also denied that the attack was antisemitic.

An investigation was handed to the Bureau of Independent Investigations, which initially declined to comment. Lawrence Lafreniere, Quebec’s domestic security minister, stated the motive was still unknown.

Federal Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed horror at the attack, acknowledging the national impact. Montreal’s mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada and Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette also issued condolences and condemned the violence. The incident remains under investigation, with authorities calling for calm and unity in the community.
