The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that there are now over 600 suspected cases of Ebola, with 139 fatalities reported, a number expected to increase as the detection of the virus continues to lag. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, there have been 51 confirmed cases of Ebola, with an additional 2 cases reported in neighboring Uganda. According to WHO's Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the outbreak, related to the Bundibugyo species of the virus, likely began several months ago. Despite this alarming situation, the WHO classified it as a public health emergency but not at a pandemic level. The health organization has assessed the epidemic's risk as high at national and regional levels but low globally. The confirmed cases in DR Congo are mainly concentrated in Ituri province, the outbreak's epicenter, and North Kivu province, with two travelers from DR Congo having confirmed cases in Uganda's capital, Kampala. The first known case connected to this outbreak involved a nurse who died on April 24, in Bunia, and the virus has since claimed multiple lives in gold-mining towns nearby. The WHO anticipates that the actual scale of the epidemic in DR Congo is likely much larger than reported. This marks DR Congo's 17th Ebola outbreak, and while Bundibugyo has previously caused severe fatalities, it lacks an approved vaccine, compounding the difficulties in managing the crisis.
