The US military has successfully rescued a missing crew member in a dramatic night-time mission after his fighter jet was shot down in a remote part of Iran. The operation to extract him from the ground in hostile territory proved to be immensely complex, employing hundreds of special forces alongside various US fighter jets and helicopters, with significant involvement from the CIA.
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump reported on social media that the airman, who suffered severe injuries, was bravely rescued from the mountainous regions of Iran. This incident marks the first time in over 20 years that a US fighter jet has been downed by enemy fire, further complicating the details surrounding the rescue operation.
The crew of the F-15E Strike Eagle successfully ejected when their aircraft was struck, but while the pilot was rescued the same day, the second crew member remained missing. Prompted by this urgent situation and reports that Iran was eager to capture him alive, the US undertook an immediate search and rescue operation.
According to reports, the officer, armed with only a handgun, managed to hide in a mountain crevice while awaiting rescue, cautiously monitoring his beacon signal to evade Iranian detection. The CIA played an integral role in tracking the airman's location and executing a deception strategy to mislead Iranian forces about the rescue efforts.
Despite various challenges, including the destruction of two US transport planes to prevent them from falling into enemy hands, the rescue mission concluded successfully, and the airman was flown to Kuwait for medical care. President Trump celebrated the mission, affirming a commitment to never leave an American warfighter behind.
