A driver who was at the wheel of Anthony Joshua's vehicle during a fatal crash that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer's friends has appeared in a Nigerian court.

Adeniyi Kayode, aged 46, faces several charges, including death by dangerous driving, following the tragic incident on December 29 that took the lives of personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami. Joshua himself was injured and required hospital treatment.

Kayode appeared in the Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun state, but the proceedings were adjourned until February 25, allowing the prosecutor additional time for legal advice.

In the courtroom, Kayode wore a black hoodie and remained silent throughout the hearing. He had been granted bail of 5 million naira (approximately $3,500 or £2,600) after an earlier release.

Joshua, a former heavyweight champion, was discharged from the hospital just two days after the Lexus SUV collided with a stationary lorry along the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Both Ayodele and Ghami were tragically pronounced dead at the crash site, while Joshua was seen being pulled from the wreckage.

Expressing grief over the loss, Joshua paid tribute to his late friends on Instagram, reflecting on their importance in his life and the pain of their families. I didn't even realize how special they are. 100% it's tough for me, but I know it's even tougher for their parents, he wrote.

The court case, with charges against Kayode including causing death by dangerous driving, has drawn attention as Joshua has familial connections to Sagamu, being from Watford but tracing his roots to the area where he was heading for New Year celebrations at the time of the accident.
