US Marine Arrested in Okinawa After Murder of Hotel Guest

A 20‑year‑old U.S. Marine has been taken into custody after the body of 39‑year‑old Anna Yagi was found in a hotel in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. Japanese authorities say the victim was discovered early Saturday morning, and the suspect, Devin Jacob Ballard, is stationed at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the crime as a "brutal and heinous" robbery and murder, urging the United States to "enforce stricter discipline" of its personnel. Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi condemned the incident and warned that U.S. military personnel causing such incidents "cause significant anxiety" to local communities.

The U.S. Marine Corps released a statement on social media saying it was "actively cooperating with Japanese authorities" and offering condolences to the victim’s family. The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo also affirmed close cooperation with the Japanese government and local police, while the foreign ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass for discussion.

Okinawa Governor Genta Koja said the prefecture has repeatedly demanded better discipline from U.S. forces. He stated that repeated incidents like this “leave us no choice but to conclude that U.S. military discipline measures are ineffective.”

The case adds to longstanding tensions surrounding the U.S. military presence in Okinawa, where tens of thousands of American troops are stationed. Local residents and officials continue to push for reforms to prevent future incidents.
