At least 11 people have been killed in a mass shooting in a residential building near Durban, South Africa.
Gunmen stormed a house in the KwaMakhutha township late on Tuesday, opening fire on 14 people. Ten were killed at the scene, four were taken to hospital where one later died from injuries, police said.
Police noted some victims were involved in illegal activities—a detail they declined to disclose for the sake of ongoing investigations. They have not ruled out a feud between rival groups as a motive.
The statement cites a party inside the house, where a pregnant woman and 13 men were present when three men arrived and started shooting. The woman was among those killed.
A local TV reporter from eNCA captured footage showing gunmen setting fire to a vehicle belonging to one victim before fleeing. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
South Africa has one of the world’s highest murder rates, with evidence pointing to more than 60 deaths per day. Recent weeks have seen spikes in violent incidents, including a wave of murders of women and a 2019 tavern shooting in Johannesburg, underscoring the pervasive threat of organised crime that President Cyril Ramaphosa identified last year.
