Police in Amsterdam arrested a 24‑year‑old suspected of belonging to the international ShinyHunters cyber‑crime group that recently claimed to have breached FBI data on 38,000 bureau staff, according to a statement from Dutch law enforcement.
The group’s claim included names, badge numbers, personal addresses and phone numbers of agents, and it said it had stolen data from key FBI systems such as FBIJOBS, BICS and MedLink.
In addition to the alleged breach, investigators say the suspect was involved in attempts to incite two murders abroad, and his seized laptop contained detailed plans for those killings.
Dutch chief Stan Duijf hailed the arrest as an important step in the investigation and warned that further suspects could be brought in.
FBI director Kash Patel thanked Dutch partners and urged other members of ShinyHunters to surrender while the offer to do so remains open.
ShinyHunters, which began in France, has caused high‑profile breaches at Rockstar Games and the Canvas education platform, exploiting a vulnerability in an Oracle cloud storage system that the FBI uses.
The group rejected claims that it hacked for profit, instead demanding a retraction of a May advisory that characterized it negatively on the dark web.
