A US Marine has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found in a hotel in Okinawa, Japan, local officials say.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the crime as a "brutal and heinous" robbery and murder and urged the United States to enforce stricter discipline of its personnel.
The public broadcaster NHK identified the victim as Yagi Anna, 39, and the suspect as Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, who is stationed at the US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
The Marine Corps said it was actively cooperating with Japanese authorities, offering condolences to the victim's family and pledging support throughout the investigation.
Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed that the body was discovered early Saturday morning in a hotel in Naha City and condemned the incident as utterly inexcusable.
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo stated it was fully cooperating with the Japanese government and local police, while Japan’s foreign ministry summoned U.S. ambassador George Glass for discussion.
Okinawa hosts several U.S. military bases and tens of thousands of American troops, a factor that fuels local tension over incidents involving U.S. forces.
Okinawa Governor Genta Koja said the prefecture has repeatedly demanded that the U.S. take action to prevent such incidents, calling the crime a sign of a lack of discipline. He added that repeated events leave no choice but to conclude that U.S. military discipline measures are ineffective.
