After a costly $13 million refurbishment, the iconic Reflecting Pool that links the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument has once again become a point of controversy.
The R‑style renovation last month painted the bronze edges bright blue, but algae sequels and unexpected paint flaking have returned the water to a telling shade of green.
President Donald Trump, who flew in a helicopter from Camp David on Sunday, declared that his “inspection” had revealed what he described as a “seriously vandalised” site and that work would commence “immediately.”
Washington Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced a zero‑tolerance stance, vowing to prosecute anyone caught damaging the monument. Police filings indicate that five people were arrested and five others cited for vandalism over the weekend.
Meanwhile, science‑based experts note that the growth of Desmodesmus algae, while harmless, can quickly shift when introduced to new environments by birds or other organisms, thereby raising concerns about potential future contamination.
The federal Park Police, which patrol the National Mall, have not yet confirmed arrest numbers or detailed the scope of the coming repairs. However, preliminary reports suggest that the pool may need to be drained and refilled again this month to address the persistent algae problem
In the meantime, the pool remains a popular backdrop for photographs and an iconic symbol of American democracy—on the brink of a new chapter in its stewardship and protection.
