Two members of the National Guard were shot and seriously wounded on Wednesday just blocks from the White House in Washington DC.
One died on Thursday while the second remains in a critical condition, US President Donald Trump said. The suspect, an Afghan national known as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is in custody.
In response to the attack, Trump said he would deploy another 500 troops to the streets of the nation's capital.
What happened in shooting near White House?
Just after 14:00 EST (19:00 GMT) on Wednesday, two members of the National Guard were shot at close range near Farragut Square in downtown Washington DC. The soldiers were participating in a high-visibility patrol when they were ambushed by the suspect who opened fire immediately.
The shooting took place in a busy area, leading to a swift response from law enforcement. The guards were transported to the hospital, where one later died, identified as Sarah Beckstrom, 20.
Trump, who was at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida at the time of the incident, described the attack as a crime against humanity and has called for increased scrutiny of Afghan nationals in the US.
Details on the Suspect
The Department of Homeland Security identified Lakanwal as a criminal alien who entered the US under a program for Afghans during the chaotic withdrawal of American forces. He is not cooperating with authorities.
Charges and Response
Lakanwal will be charged with three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, which could lead to significant prison time if convicted.
Remembering the Victims
The other National Guard member, Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition after being shot multiple times. Both soldiers were in DC to ensure safety during the Thanksgiving holiday.
As the nation mourns, President Trump has expressed profound condolences, emphasizing the bravery of the National Guard members.
