NEW YORK (RTW News) — New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced plans to deploy legal observers across the state to monitor federal immigration enforcement actions. The initiative will see observers wearing purple safety vests sent to locations where immigration enforcement activities have been reported. This effort aims to gather information that could potentially guide future legal actions, James stated.

The move comes amid ongoing unrest and scrutiny surrounding President Donald Trump's stringent immigration policies, especially following tragic incidents like the deaths of two U.S. citizens during federal enforcement operations in Minnesota. Video footage of immigration arrests that surfaced online has led to widespread criticism regarding the use of excessive force by federal agents.

In her announcement, James emphasized her commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights of New Yorkers. We have seen in Minnesota how quickly and tragically federal operations can escalate in the absence of transparency and accountability, she said, reaffirming her directive that observers will act as neutral witnesses who document any violations without interfering with enforcement activities.

Additionally, she has encouraged residents to submit video footage of any federal immigration actions they witness for her office’s review.

On a broader legislative front, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has also stated her intent to pursue legislation aimed at allowing individuals to sue federal officers for actions taken beyond their authorized duties, as well as measures to restrict immigration agents from entering sensitive places such as schools and hospitals without a warrant.
