Federal immigration agents deployed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will soon receive body cameras, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced. The new policy comes after heightened scrutiny following the deaths of two US citizens – Alex Pretti and Renee Good – amid an immigration crackdown in the area.

Effective immediately we are deploying body cameras to every officer in the field in Minneapolis, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated on X, asserting the need for more oversight of federal operations.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has ruled Pretti's death a homicide, where it was reported he suffered multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by law enforcement. The circumstances are currently under investigation by the US Department of Justice.

Noem clarified that while funding is currently limited, plans to expand this body camera initiative nationwide are in place once resources become available.

With ongoing tensions and a partial government shutdown, the city of Minneapolis is seeing increased federal presence, raising calls from local leaders for a withdrawal of agents to ensure community safety.
