Mexican Nationals Arrested in South Africa Amid Massive Meth Lab Raid
Police in Johannesburg announced that a clandestine crystal methamphetamine factory was found at a remote farm near Musina in Limpopo province, on the border with Zimbabwe. Two Mexican nationals were arrested, along with a Malawian and two Zimbabwean suspects.
The operation, launched overnight after a two‑month investigation that tracked suspicious activity on the property, seized drugs, production equipment and cash worth roughly 600m rand (about $37 million). The law enforcement teams noted that the operation appeared to be a sophisticated, industrial‑scale production hub intended for export.
South Africa has witnessed a series of similar clandestine laboratories in recent years, with a growing number involving Mexican nationals. Past raids have uncovered labs worth up to $20 million, and in July 2024 a separate site in Limpopo yielded drugs worth $108 million.
The suspects will appear in court on Monday, facing charges of drug manufacturing and possession. The incident underscores the broader problem of drug trafficking routes and production centers that exploit remote African locations.
