FORT PIERCE, Fla. — A man convicted of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump in 2024 has been sentenced to life in prison. Judge Aileen Cannon stated during sentencing that such an act is unacceptable in any society.
Ryan Routh, 60, was found guilty of multiple counts linked to his assassination attempt, which occurred while Trump played golf in West Palm Beach. Prosecutors described Routh's planned attack as a serious threat to American democracy.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Shipley emphasized the severity of Routh's crimes, stating, 'American democracy does not work when individuals take it into their own hands to eliminate candidates.'
During his sentencing, Routh read from a lengthy statement, though he was cut off by the judge for irrelevance. He claimed to have led a good life and did everything possible, though the judge disagreed, describing his actions as 'deliberate and evil.'
The judge ultimately sentenced Routh to life in prison and outlined that he would serve an additional seven years for a firearm-related charge, which would run concurrently with his other sentences.
Routh's defense attorney had argued for leniency, stating his client's age and complex background should be taken into account. Routh had plotted the attack for weeks, aiming a rifle through bushes before fleeing when confronted by law enforcement.
His plot was thwarted before any shots were fired, illustrating both the potential consequences of political animosity and the ongoing debates surrounding the safety of public figures.
The judge had previously allowed Routh to represent himself in court, raising first amendment rights issues, but eventually granted his request for legal representation based on his conduct during trial.
