HUDSONVILLE, Mich. — A major winter storm swept across Michigan on Monday, resulting in a significant pileup on Interstate 196. Over 100 vehicles were involved in crashes or slid off the road due to heavy snowfall fueled by the Great Lakes. Among the vehicles were more than 30 semitrailer trucks.

The Michigan State Police swiftly closed both directions of the interstate, located southwest of Grand Rapids, to facilitate the recovery efforts. Authorities confirmed that numerous injuries were reported, though no fatalities have occurred, which is a relief amid the chaos.

This pileup is the latest event influenced by the severe winter weather affecting the region. The National Weather Service has continued to issue alerts about extremely low temperatures and potential winter storms, stretching from northern Minnesota down through states like Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Witnesses on-site highlighted the hazardous conditions that contributed to the accidents, prompting the need for the emergency response team. Multiple motorists who became stranded were bused to Hudsonville High School, where they could reach out for assistance or arrange alternative transportation.

Road closures are expected to remain in effect for several hours as cleanup efforts continue. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and stay informed about weather updates as conditions evolve.
