PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities are combing through evidence and appealing to the public for information in their pursuit of the gunman responsible for the deadly shooting at Brown University, which left two students dead and nine others injured over the weekend.
On Monday, local officials released new surveillance footage of the suspect, who was seen wearing a mask and a dark jacket. While his face remains obscured, authorities believe this video may be crucial in identifying him.
The FBI estimates the suspect's height to be around 5 feet 8 inches and is offering a reward of $50,000 for information that can lead to his capture.
Providence’s police chief, Col. Oscar Perez, emphasized the need for public assistance, urging anyone who recognizes the suspect or has further footage to come forward.
After initially detaining a person of interest, authorities reversed course when it became clear that the evidence did not link him to the crime.
As details unfold, it has emerged that the two students lost in the attack were actively involved in their communities. Ella Cook, a sophomore and vice president of the Brown College Republicans, and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman, were remembered as bright lights within their networks.
The incident took place during finals week, provoking bedlam on campus and raising pressing questions about security measures in place at the university, an institution known for its rich history and academic rigor.
Governor Dan McKee has requested additional police presence at schools to reassure students, families, and educators in the wake of the tragedy. Meanwhile, a 'Community Service of Lament, Healing, and Hope' is set to be held on campus to support those affected by the shooting.
As the investigation continues, community efforts are also ramping up to provide support and healing in the aftermath of this heartbreaking event.
