A 'person of interest' who was detained in connection with a deadly shooting at Brown University in the US will be released shortly, local officials have said. Providence Police Chief Col Oscar Perez stated that there was not enough evidence to prosecute the detained individual, with Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha noting that evidence 'now points in a different direction.' The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are actively searching for additional video evidence to help identify the gunman responsible for the attack, which occurred in a classroom at the Ivy League campus.

On Saturday, two individuals were killed and nine others sustained injuries from the shooting at the Holley engineering building. At a joint news conference, Chief Perez revealed that the person detained did not match the description of the suspect captured on CCTV footage released shortly after the incident. The video showed a person dressed in all black fleeing the scene. Despite the arrest based on initial leads, investigators are refocusing their efforts and collecting further evidence.

As of the latest updates, seven people injured in the assault remain in stable condition, while another is in critical condition. The identities of the deceased and most of the injured party have not yet been disclosed. Notably, one victim, Kendall Turner, an alum of the private Durham Academy in North Carolina, was reported injured. Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed that all those killed and wounded were students.

In a statement expressing condolences, Paxson mentioned ongoing support for the families of the victims while the university community grapples with this tragedy.

A vigil is scheduled for the community, and many students were temporarily relocated to safe locations as police investigations continued. All are urged to support each other during this difficult time as the university seeks to understand the incident's full implications amid a broader discussion about gun violence in the US.
